Local Attractions

The Association for the Development of Tiébélé (ADT) is the official provider of guides for Kassena country. ADT guides are members of the Tiébélé community and are all experienced and knowledgeable. The following is a list of attractions throughout the surrounding area. Tours are arranged through ADT by inquiring at the Auberge Kunkolo.

The Royal Court is the premiere attraction of Kassena Country. Stunning, traditionally built and beautifully decorated houses have been carefully preserved for generations. The Royal Court offers visitors an incredible visit through a living museum.

The Craft Market showcases a number of locally made goods. Here you can speak with the folks who make the crafts and buy from them, thus directly supporting the artist. Masks, jewelry, baskets, pottery, and other crafts are all available as souvenirs of your visit.

Tiébélé Market , located in the center of town, provides a prime example of a traditional African village market. Seasonal produce, spices, clothing, dyed fabric, shea butter, and a number of other goods are all colorfully displayed under the shade of ancient trees.

Shea Butter is made in Tiébélé by the women’s group “Pébatioga” which translated means, “The King Fixes, He Doesn't Ruin“. Ask an ADT guide to arrange a visit to learn how shea butter is made straight from the women who know best.

Tiébélé Hill can be climbed to afford a beautiful panoramic view of Tiébélé, the nearby lake, and the surrounding rolling hills. The half-hour hike to the top is well worth the effort to take in the tranquil view.

Boungou
South of Tiébélé is the small village of Boungou. Easily accessible by foot or bike, Boungou can provide a great half-day trip during your stay in Kassena Country.

Badagnim translates to, “Don’t forget the work of the ancestors,” is a women’s group known throughout Kassena Country for their skillfully made pottery. The technique has been passed down for generations. Visitors can learn how the pottery is made and have the opportunity to purchase pieces to take home with them.

Sacred Crocodiles silently lurk in a small lake in Boungou. Lured to the edge by brave Boungou men, these crocodiles are said to be connected to the spirits of the ancestors and are believed to be harmless to people.

Tangassogo
Another great trip from Tiébélé, Tangassogo offers a different look at Kassena houses. Less visited than the Royal Court of Tiébélé, many visitors are impressed with the authenticity of this site. The decorated houses are only a short walk from the bustling market, just a stone’s throw from Ghana.

Guelwongo
Less than 20 kilometers from Tiébélé and lying on the Ghanaian border is the large and busy market of Guelwongo.

Nahouri Peak
Climb the peak, see far. Nahouri Peak, the highest point in the region is located 15km from Tiébélé. Accesible by foot, bike, moto or 4X4, the peak offers a gentle hour long climb to the summit affording a magnificent panoramic view extending into Ghana.

Nazinga National Park
Elephants, water buffalo, antelope, waterbuck, oribi, warthog, baboons, red monkeys, hyenas, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species can be found in this 94,000ha park.
