Auberge Kunkolo

About Us

Our youthful owner, Mathieu Petit, arrived in Burkina Faso over 10 years ago from France. He opened the auberge in 2003 and resides in Tiébélé and Ouagadougou. After an intial trip to West Africa, Matthew returned to France for a short peroid before returing permanantely to Tiébélé to open the auberge. With a warm welcome, Matthieu quickly became a member of the community and Auberge Kunkolo a well respected establishment in Tiébélé. Matthieu is a member of the Association pour le Developpment for Tiébélé (ADT) enabling the auberge to arrange expert guided tours and excursions in Tiébélé and througout the Kassena Country.

Pierre Ouedam Kouhizoura, chef and manager, was born and raised in Tiébélé. A member of the royal family, Ouedam is a great source on Kassena history and culture. Ouedam has been applauded for his mastery in the kitchen, his attentive service to guests as well as his friendly, laid-back attitude.

ADT

Auberge Kunkolo is a member of the Association for the Development for Tiebele (ADT). ADT is a non-profit organization commited to sustainable progress for the citizens of Tiebele. ADT provides guides for all of the tours throughout Kassena country. The fees associated with the tours are split between the guides, the families of the Cour Royale and ADT, who uses its share for community-based projects. Through responsible tourism ADT has been able to maintain the Cour Royale, open a public library, start a tree-growing nursery, and has produced an annual cultural festival, Faa-can-dia, celebrating the traditons of the Kassena people.
